How to Know If You’re Hiring the Right Motivational Speaker
Trying to find the right motivational speaker for your event can be a daunting task. How do you know if you’ve made the right choice? What if the speaker doesn’t deliver? A keynote speech that falls flat could ruin your entire event. What’s more, if you’re the event planner in charge of finding the perfect motivational speaker, a wrong choice could even cost you your job.
With so much riding on your decision, vetting a motivational speaker before you hire them is crucial. Ideally, it would be great to fly the speaker out and have them give a talk as a dress rehearsal of sorts. That way, you could easily see if they would be a good fit for your audience. Unfortunately, that kind of in-depth audition isn’t cost-effective or realistic for most companies.
In order to trust you’ve found the perfect motivational speaker, get to know them and their work before you make your hiring decision.
• Watch videos of the motivational speaker to get a sense of their tone, style, and value-add. A single video isn’t enough – check their website for multiple talks and look for common threads between each speech. Having a strong sense of what to expect will assure you you’ve found the right speaker.
• Look for experience with your type of audience. Check the motivational speaker’s client list to make sure they know how to cater to the unique needs of your audience and your company’s challenges.
• Meet with them online multiple times during the hiring process and before the event. Phone calls and video chats will assure you of their professionalism, and make it easier to spot red flags should any arise.
